Nearly three decades after Princess Diana was killed in a Paris car crash, an incendiary memoir has reignited the bitterest feud in modern royal history.
In his tell-all memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, levels staggering accusations against King Charles III, detailing explosive private phone calls and alleging chilling reactions from within the royal apparatus following Diana’s death in August 1997.
The revelations have shattered the palace’s long-standing policy of dignified silence on Diana’s final days, triggering fierce pushback from royal insiders and dominating headlines worldwide.

The Chilling Phone Call: “Giddily Elated”

The most provocative excerpt centers on a phone conversation that Earl Spencer alleges took place between himself and the then-Prince of Wales in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.  

According to Spencer, when Charles called him to discuss funeral arrangements, his tone was unexpectedly upbeat. Spencer writes that the future king sounded “giddily elated” over the phone, suggesting an almost palpable sense of relief among courtiers that Diana was gone.  

Spencer further alleges that Charles dismissed the long-term impact of Diana’s death, reportedly telling him: “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough”.

In the book, Spencer recounts his stunned reaction to the remark: “I can’t believe you just said that,” he replied flatly before abruptly hanging up the phone on the heir to the throne.

The Funeral Procession Row: Protecting the Heir

The tell-all also exposes the fierce, behind-the-scenes row over whether Diana’s young sons, Prince William and Prince Harry—then aged 15 and 12—should walk behind their mother’s coffin through the streets of London.  

Spencer claims he vehemently opposed making the young boys walk in the procession, arguing it was a cruel expectation for grieving children. When Charles pushed back by saying, “But I did it at Lord Mountbatten’s funeral!” Spencer retorted: “But you were 30, sir, and he wasn’t your mother”.  

According to Spencer, Charles lost his temper, shouting: “That’s the problem with your family. They’ve got no bloody sense of duty!” Spencer claims that Buckingham Palace courtiers ultimately insisted on the boys walking to shield Charles from potential public hostility and jeers from the millions gathered on London’s streets.
