Under Oath: Disgraced Andrew Ordered to Give Evidence in Bombshell High Court Fraud Trial

Published

Just when Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor believed he could quietly withdraw into the secluded privacy of Royal Lodge, London’s High Court has thrust him back into the legal spotlight.

In a development not seen for a royal figure since the 19th century, the former Duke of York has been served with a formal witness summons compelling him to give evidence under oath in an ongoing multimillion-pound High Court civil fraud trial.
The ruling shatters any remaining wall of separation between Andrew and the UK judicial system. While he is not accused of unlawful wrongdoing in the fraud action itself, the court order legally obligates him to face cross-examination regarding shadowy financial transactions, substantial cash transfers, and his ties to a Turkish businessman accused of misappropriating tens of millions from an elderly millionaire.

The £40 Million Feud Reaches the Royal Household
The explosive legal battle centers on claims brought by 81-year-old Turkish millionaire Nebahat Evyap Isbilen. She alleges that former Goldman Sachs banker Selman Turk misappropriated roughly £40 million of her offshore wealth while helping her transfer funds out of Turkey.
Court disclosures revealed that significant sums from the alleged fraud found their way directly into accounts linked to Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah, Duchess of York.
Among the scrutinized transactions is a £750,000 payment delivered to Andrew, initially framed as a “wedding gift” for Princess Beatrice, as well as separate financial transfers linked to private business pitches. Although Andrew quietly repaid the funds in an earlier private settlement after Mrs. Isbilen’s lawyers raised the alarm, the defendant has called the royal to testify to support his version of events.

Forced Into the Open: The High Court Summons
For months, legal representatives wrestled over whether the former prince could be compelled to appear. Under British legal precedent, royals are rarely brought to court to testify in commercial litigation. However, Mr Justice Adam Johnson ruled that Andrew’s evidence is material to resolving conflicting accounts of how and why the money moved.
Under the terms of the summons, Andrew will be required to give testimony either in person at the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand or via secure remote video link.
The appearance will mark the first time Andrew has been forced to answer direct questions under legal jeopardy since his catastrophic 2019 BBC Newsnight interview. Legal experts emphasize that refusing a High Court witness summons carries severe contempt-of-court penalties—leaving him with no mechanism to evade questioning.
A Nightmare for Buckingham Palace
The court date lands at a catastrophic moment for King Charles and Prince William, who have spent years systematically dismantling Andrew’s official standing, stripping his military titles, and cutting his private security stipends to protect the institution.
Having the King’s brother forced into the witness box to account for offshore funds reignites scrutiny into his private financial dealings. For Buckingham Palace courtiers, the prospect of Andrew undergoing forensic cross-examination under oath is the ultimate institutional nightmare: a public spectacle proving that no matter how many titles the Crown strips away, his legal entanglements continue to drag the monarchy down.
