**SANTA FE, N.M. —** New Mexico’s state legislature has formally launched a bipartisan “truth commission” to investigate claims about what occurred at the former Zorro Ranch, the sprawling property once owned by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The panel’s creation comes amid renewed public interest after millions of federal documents related to Epstein’s activities were recently made public.
The four-member commission, approved unanimously by the New Mexico House of Representatives, is empowered to collect testimony, issue subpoenas, and review public records as part of its effort to establish an official record of events at the 7,600-acre ranch near Stanley, about 35 miles south of Santa Fe. Lawmakers say the goal is to fill investigative gaps left by earlier federal probes which, they argue, did not thoroughly examine the property.
Commission chair **Rep. Andrea Romero** has emphasized transparency and a “survivor-centered” approach to the inquiry, saying the panel will seek testimony from victims and other witnesses and publish findings publicly. A website and tip line are being established to facilitate public input.
The commission does *not* itself bring criminal charges, but its work could inform future prosecutions or legislative reforms. In 2019, New Mexico’s then attorney general investigated aspects of Epstein’s New Mexico activity, but paused the inquiry at the request of federal prosecutors.
This investigation reflects broader efforts across the United States to scrutinize Epstein’s ensnared network and historical handling by authorities, even as some allegations circulating online remain unverified.
