Harry and Meghan’s Christmas Plans Raise Questions About Their Relationship With the Royal Family
Harry and Meghan’s Christmas Decision: Why a Royal Family Reunion at Sandringham Looks Unlikely
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly preparing for a very different Christmas this year, despite having returned to Britain with their children after spending several years living in California.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to spend the festive period with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, rather than join King Charles and the wider Royal Family for their traditional Christmas celebrations at Sandringham.
The development has attracted attention because it comes just months after the couple reportedly returned to the United Kingdom with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, raising expectations that family relationships could gradually improve.
However, the possibility of a Christmas reunion at Sandringham appears increasingly uncertain.
Why Harry and Meghan May Stay Away From Sandringham
According to reports from People and The Sunday Times, Harry and Meghan intend to organise their Christmas celebrations around Doria Ragland’s preferences.
Ragland lives in California, but the couple are reportedly willing to accommodate her wishes, whether that means celebrating in Britain or travelling to the United States.
A source quoted by The Sunday Times suggested that the Sussexes do not expect an invitation to the Royal Family’s traditional Christmas gathering.
The source described the prospect of spending Christmas together as too awkward and difficult, suggesting that the couple are not waiting for an invitation.
These comments have fuelled further discussion about the relationship between Harry and his relatives.
Harry last celebrated Christmas with the Royal Family at Sandringham in 2018. Since stepping back from their senior royal responsibilities in 2020, he and Meghan have largely celebrated the festive season separately from the King’s household.
Has the Relationship With King Charles Improved?
There have been indications of renewed communication between Harry and his father.
Reports earlier this year suggested that King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted Harry, Meghan and their children at Highgrove House in July.
Harry has also spoken publicly about wanting to repair his relationship with his family.
Nevertheless, his relationship with Prince William remains particularly strained. The brothers have not publicly demonstrated a significant reconciliation, and there is little indication that the wider family disagreements have been resolved.
The distinction between Harry’s relationship with his father and his relationship with his brother is important. Even if communication with the King has improved, that does not automatically mean the Sussexes will return to traditional family celebrations.
Could Christmas Bring a Royal Family Surprise?
There is another interesting development.
A former royal butler, Grant Harrold, has suggested that Harry and Meghan could still receive an invitation to Sandringham, although he believes certain conditions would need to be met.
His comments have introduced another possibility into the discussion, even though there has been no official confirmation of an invitation.
For now, the Sussexes’ reported plans appear to centre on spending Christmas with Doria rather than participating in the King’s traditional celebrations.
Whether the couple ultimately celebrate in Britain or California remains unclear.
One thing is certain: their Christmas arrangements will attract considerable attention, particularly among royal watchers hoping to see some progress in the long-running family disagreements.
Do you think King Charles should invite Harry and Meghan to Sandringham this Christmas, or should the Sussexes continue celebrating separately?
