‘I Can Look to Catherine for Advice’: Harriet Sperling Breaks Her Silence on Marrying Into the Royal Family

Marrying into the British Royal Family is famously described as entering a golden fishbowl—an environment where few outsiders truly grasp the intense public scrutiny and arcane traditions.

Now, five months after quietly tying the knot with Princess Anne’s eldest son, Peter Phillips, former NHS nurse and writer Harriet Sperling (now Harriet Phillips) has broken her silence in her first wide-ranging royal interview.

Speaking candidly about adjusting to royal life on the Gatcombe Park estate, Harriet pulled back the curtain on her relationships within the inner circle—offering rare, revealing insight into her special dynamic with Catherine, Princess of Wales.

The Unfiltered First Meeting with William and Kate

Recalling her first introduction to Prince William and Princess Catherine, Harriet revealed that the high-profile encounter was far removed from stiff palace protocol.

“I’ve had an incredible experience being welcomed in,” Harriet told HELLO!. “We happened to be on holiday in the same place. It was great because the children were all jumping into the water at the same time. It was very casual, but there is a clear level of respect there.”  

The down-to-earth introduction set the tone for an enduring bond. For Harriet, who spent years working in public healthcare while raising her teenage daughter Georgia as a single mother, stepping into the royal orbit presented an entirely foreign world.  

When asked where she turns for guidance as a non-royal woman adapting to the Crown’s unique pressures, Harriet singled out Catherine directly:

“I can look to Catherine for advice and guidance. She’s very open-hearted, and I would always feel comfortable asking her if I needed advice about something.”

Behind Closed Doors with Princess Anne

Beyond her bond with the Princess of Wales, Harriet addressed what it is like having one of the most formidable working royals—Princess Anne—as a mother-in-law.  

Far from an intimidating interrogation, Harriet recalled meeting the Princess Royal over tea on simple garden benches. “It was really relaxed; we sat on garden benches having cups of tea. It couldn’t have been nicer and was very similar to when Peter met my family,” she explained.

Today, Peter and Harriet reside in a private cottage tucked away on the Gatcombe Park Estate in Gloucestershire, living alongside Zara and Mike Tindall. While Peter—the late Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest grandchild—carries no official royal title and pursues private commercial ventures, Harriet’s seamless integration into the family underscores a modernized, grounded atmosphere behind palace gates.  

In Catherine, Harriet hasn’t just found a future Queen Consort; she has found an experienced confidante who navigated the exact same transition from private citizen to royal insider—and came out thriving on the other side.
