BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV has stirred up the MAGA movement on Holy Thursday by condemning what he called an “imperialist occupation,” just one day after Donald Trump delivered a speech in which he refused to end the war with Iran.

This pope clearly refuses to back down.
“The cross is part of the mission. The imperialist occupation of the world is disrupted from within; the violence that until now has been the law is exposed,” Leo wrote on X.

“The poor, imprisoned, and rejected Messiah descends into the darkness of death, yet in doing so He brings a new creation to light. #HolyThursday”
The choice of words—typical of this thoughtful and morally grounded leader—was far from accidental. On one level, Leo was referring to the Roman imperial presence in Judea during the time of Christ. It was that same imperial force that ultimately nailed Him to the cross.

On another level, he was clearly referring to the conflict with Iran, which he has repeatedly condemned while calling for a ceasefire. At the same time, Israel has been expanding into Lebanon, seizing territory and bombing civilians with American-made weapons. The entire Middle East is burning, according to critics, due to the actions of Trump and Netanyahu.

Predictably, Republicans on social media quickly attacked Leo again, calling him a “communist” for speaking out against imperialism. In doing so, critics say, they reveal themselves. These self-described Christians are accused of believing in nothing beyond the exercise of raw authoritarian power.
Supporters describe Leo as a blessing in dark times. This, they argue, is what true religious leadership looks like: proclaiming eternal truths rooted in faith while applying those convictions to the modern political landscape.

While Pope Leo calls for compassion and peace, some evangelical leaders who support Trump have compared him to Jesus even as he is accused of causing civilian deaths overseas.
