### **Background: Trump’s History With Defamation Lawsuits**
While the Obama lawsuit claim lacks verification, it is true that Donald Trump and other major political figures have been involved in high‑profile defamation lawsuits in recent years:
* In **2025, Trump filed a **$10 billion defamation lawsuit against the *Wall Street Journal* and media mogul Rupert Murdoch over reporting related to his ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein**. ([Newsweek][2])
* He also sued the *New York Times* and others for **$15 billion**, claiming defamation and libel over coverage and a book portraying him unfavorably. ([The Daily Star][3])
* Beyond media groups, individuals including the **Central Park Five members** have sued Trump for defamation over his comments on their case. ([The Guardian][4])
These ongoing legal battles highlight how defamation suits are part of the broader political and legal landscape between Trump and his critics — but **none involves Obama preparing a $150 billion claim**.
### **Legal Reality: Suing Over Political Speech Is Complex**
Legal experts routinely note that defamation claims involving public figures — especially former presidents — face very high hurdles in the United States. Under U.S. libel law, a public figure must generally show that false statements were made with *actual malice* — meaning the speaker knew the statements were false or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
Moreover, in past disputes involving presidents, courts have sometimes ruled that actions connected to official duties enjoy broad immunities or First Amendment protections. Cases involving political commentary and satire (such as controversial posts or claims about conduct) are especially challenging to win in defamation courts.
