Fans of Taylor Swift have taken to the internet to express disappointment over Travis Kelce’s apparent approval of the viral misogynistic joke.
Male comedians making jokes about women’s bodies is nothing new, but what appears to be support for these statements from Travis Kelce, none other than Mr. Swift himself, has upset scores of Taylor Swift fans.
American actor and comedian Shane Gillis took over the esteemed role of hosting Saturday Night Live last Saturday night (October 10), alongside a performance from Rosalíia. And, for whatever reason, he thought calling women ‘whores’ would go down well with both 50 Rockefeller’s audience and the wider world.
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now,” Gillis quipped. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. You’ve seen the shorts?” Gillis continued, to minimal laughter at Studio 8H. The joke was quickly and widely condemned across the internet. Which, naturally, made those who seemingly endorsed the sexist joke stand out even more. When fans noticed @killatrav liking the official Saturday Night Live’s Instagram video of the Gillis opening monologue, it rapidly caught on across social media.
across social media.
“travis kelce liking that horribly misogynistic snl vid… maybe that’s just the kind of humor they have in cleveland,” commented one X user, referencing Kelce’s hometown and Swift’s most recent track from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.
And Swifties being Swifties, their feelings of anger and disappointment were not exactly kept a secret. “Even the ones you think are good, aren’t,” said someone in a Swifties thread on Threads. “This was poor choice for Mr. Swift to make.”
“I just want to say how disappointing I find this,” another fan commented on Reddit. “Taylor has made her defense of women’s rights a huge part of her career. Songs like Blank Space, SLUT!, The Man, and others are her expressing her frustrations with misogyny and rape culture… And then her husband who she is so obsessed with is contributing to said culture she made her career off of.”
While Kelce’s ‘support’ is admittedly implied rather than explicitly stated, other celebrities made it very clear just how opposed they were to Gillis’s jokes. Fellow actor and comedian Dan Levy called out Gillis in a video uploaded on Instagram, saying that actually, “the men calling them whores [are] misogynists.”
And singer Maren Morris also joined in with the tide of backlash against Gillis and his joke, that’s only increased as the days have rolled on since last Saturday. Taking to her own Instagram, Morris uploaded her own post as well, with the message “me being a wh0re at the gym” across a video of herself soundtracked by her song “be a bitch.” In the video, she throws up a middle finger to the camera, concluding with the caption: “leave my gym short wedgie out of it.”
